Scott Parker says he is ‘hurt’ and ‘gutted’ as the Fulham boss bemoaned his side’s lack of quality as the Cottagers were put out of their misery and relegated from the Premier League on Monday night.

The west London club entered their clash with Burnley needing a win to keep their faint survival hopes alive. However, strikes from Ashley Westwood and Chris Wood consigned the newcomers to immediate relegation to the Championship.

Parker oversaw a poor start to the campaign, not securing a win until their seventh game and despite a mini resurgence, the Cottagers were unable to claw their way out of danger.

And the Englishman has conceded that his side were unable to show the quality required at both ends to stave off the threat of relegation.

‘I’m bitterly disappointed. I’m hurt. I’m gutted,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘While there’s been that looming over us for some time now, there’s no words in this present moment in time I can put together other than I’m gutted that we’ve not managed to be successful this year.

‘While we always knew it was going to be a challenge it is bitterly disappointing we have not managed to do that.

‘I would probably sum it up in that game to be honest with you. In between the boxes we have had our moments and looked a good side. Where we have fallen short is either side.

‘In these clinical moments you need those final details, you need the clinicalness to score goals and we have fallen short. While we have had progression, improvements, we have fallen short at this level.’

Parker added that he is keen for the club to avoid the ‘rollercoaster’ of constant relegation and promotion between the top two tiers, and says he will hold talks with the club over setting about a plan to go in the right direction.

‘We need to work out what we need to do to improve that as a football club. That’s a promotion, a relegation and a promotion. We need to work out exactly what we need to do now to try and keep a level about us and that’s the next task really.

‘We have just fallen short. We need to work out very quickly as a football club where we went wrong this year. At every avenue there are going to be elements where we need to understand. I feel like I know but now is not the time to really go into great detail.

‘What is key for me and vitally important for me is we sat down, we analyze, we learn and not go through the same cycle. What is key is we break that cycle and work out exactly what we need to improve as a football club.

‘I will be the first to put my point across, I don’t want to come into this league and get relegated. I want to move this club forwards, that is going to be key.’
