Nate Diaz’s return to the octagon against Britain’s Leon Edwards ‘DELAYED until June 12 after fan-favourite picks up minor injury’ ahead of UFC 262 co-main event
- Nate Diaz’s return to the UFC has been rescheduled due to a minor injury
- The 36-year-old was due to fight Leon Edwards in the co-main event at UFC 262
- However, the bout has been moved to June 12 as a result of an injury sustained
- Britain’s Edwards is looking to earn himself a shot at Kamaru Usman’s title
Diaz, 36, has been out of action since competing for the BMF title against Jorge Masvidal at Madison Square Garden in November 2019, where he was stopped after three rounds due to cuts sustained.
The Stockton-born fighter was due to face British welterweight contender Edwards in the five-round co-main event of UFC 262, scheduled for May 15.
Nate Diaz’s return to the UFC has been delayed by a month due to a minor injury sustained
The fan-favourite, 36, was due to take on Britain’s Leon Edwards at UFC 262 on May 15
However, ESPN reports that Edwards v Diaz has been pushed back owing to an undisclosed, minor injury sustained by the 36-year-old.
The fight has subsequently been moved to UFC 263 next month in Glendale, Arizona, with the UFC opting to keep the bout intact rather than search for a late replacement to take on Edwards.
Birmingham-based Briton Edwards is hoping that a victory over Diaz will propel him into a title fight with welterweight king Kamaru Usman.
Edwards is the No 4-ranked contender at 170-pounds and is on a nine-fight winning streak, although his last bout against Belal Muhammad ended in a no contest due to an accidental eye poke.
However, an undisclosed injury has delayed the five-round contest until UFC 263 on June 12
Diaz was last in action over 18 months ago when he took on Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244
Usman recently defeated Masvidal at UFC 261 in Jacksonville, Florida, and is expected to take on Colby Covington next. Edwards will look to put himself in a strong position should that fight fail to materialise.
UFC 262 is set to be headlined by Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira, who are competing for Khabib Nurmagomedov’s vacant lightweight title. Former interim champion Tony Ferguson is taking on Beneil Dariush on the undercard.
ESPN adds that Edwards v Diaz will remain a five-round contest at UFC 263, where Israel Adesanya defends his middleweight crown against Marvin Vettori while Deiveson Figueiredo defends his flyweight title against Brandon Moreno in the co-main event.
