Chelsea defender, Ben Chilwell says he and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw will battle it out on who starts for England in the left-back position.
The Blues defender, however, described the battle as a positive one.
Chilwell is currently on international duty with the Three Lions as they prepare for their World Cup qualifying and Euro 2021 matches.
“At Chelsea, you’ve got two or three good players in each position and at England, you should expect the same thing,” he told the Guardian.
“Going into the Euros, if Luke and I are battling it out and trying to prove who’s having the best club form going into the tournament, that’s only a positive.
The former Leicester City star added that such competition will help the players’ sharpness and they will be ready to play with confidence, “Then whoever plays is ready and that’s important,” he said.
Meanwhile, Portugal coach, Fernández Santos has dismissed any suggestion that Ronaldo’s struggles at Juventus will affect his mindset at the international level.
“When Cristiano is with the national team, he always comes with the same vision, the same passion, the same will, the same joy,” he told a press conference ahead of their game on Wednesday.
“He always gives 100 per cent when he comes to the national team. I don’t think he has any problem in terms of mentality at the moment.”
